Eagle Nest Ranch--A Natural Treasure

There are still places of natural refuge, untrammeled by development, where plants, birds, and other animals live in natural balance. Such a place is Eagle Nest Ranch.

Eagle Nest is a 2500-acre working ranch raising beef cattle and exotic wildlife in the canyons of the Texas Hill Country. Half in native oak savannah and half in mixed hardwood and juniper forest, it is surrounded by sparsely-settled country; only 1500 people live in the county. The ranch has historic interest also; the headquarters pasture was once the site of a big Native American settlement and the gravel road throughout the ranch connected the old system of frontier army forts.

This is a place of limestone cliffs, pecan slopes and springs that give rise to the Nueces River. Crystal clear and abounding in bass, the river flows for 1.5 miles through the ranch, providing superb swimming and fishing. In one valley is perhaps the most beautiful "blue hole"--a spring fed pool in a limestone outcropping--in Texas.

One hundred and twenty species of birds are resident during the summer or winter, including the golden eagle, bald eagle, cliff swallow, kingfisher, painted bunting, black phoebe, and vermillion flycatcher. Exotic wildlife such as blackbuck antelope, axis and fallow deer, Corsican sheep, and aoudad flourish alongside native whitetail deer and turkey. The land wears beautiful wildflower colors during the spring and summer and the rare Texas snowbells bloom by the river.
